THIS IS FANTASTIC NEWS! What was originally thought to have been tossed out, and destroyed after it’s use in the 1968 film 2001: A Space Odyssey, has now been confirmed to be in good hands and restored!
I was contacted a few weeks ago by a friend and colleague about this fantastic restoration by well known industry artist Gordon Tarpley. Gordon had placed a video up on YouTube publicly showing his restoration of this piece that he did for a client (the owner of the piece). You may watch the video below. As such, I had sent Gordon a note through YouTube that has gone unanswered...
Known Industry artist Gene Kozicki recently had the opportunity to photograph and take measurements of a studio filming model that was thought to have been destroyed decades ago… the Aries 1B! Gene documented this piece extremely well and wanted to share it with the world. I thank Gene for doing so. These will serve the art form well.. and preserve a timeless design.
2001 A Space Odyssey is a huge piece of Science Fiction film making history! All the studio models used in the film were thought to have been destroyed. A few weeks ago something amazing came to light! Thank goodness, as it seems some may have survived! This one, the Aries 1B is such a model and is now up for auction with an expected final price tag of over 6 figures! I wish to thank artist Gene Kozicki for sending me these great photos of this famed studio model. Gene will be following this up with even better photos of the detail soon enough. Thanks again Gene!!

2001…. a movie that some could not fully understand. And some simply could not handle. Most masterpieces are like that. And with it’s success… much later than it’s release, people are finally beginning to celebrate it’s genius! Here are some photos from the 1968 LIFE Magazine Spread.
These photos were recently taken during the clearing out of Richard Edlund’s storage by my friends Gene Kozicki and Rob Mcfarlane. They were doing this to restore some of the studio models to be displayed. In these two photos you can see how large the Command Sphere was of the Discovery from 2010 as Rob Mcfarlane sticks his head inside! What a joker!
Known Hollywood professional, and my mentor friend, Gene Kozicki recently had the honor of restoring a few of the studio models from 2010, among other things that Richard Edlund had in his storage area. He did a beautiful job indeed!
These photo of the Russian Leonov from 2010 The Year We Make Contact were given to me by a good friend. They show just how massive this studio model really was!
