Originally shown here on Modeler Magic April 23, 2010.. I thought this could be brought forward due to this amazing design. From Space, Above and Beyond comes the SA-43 Hammerhead Fighter of the 58th Marine Squadron…. “The Wild Cards”. Masterfully created by Alfred Wong… THIS model was also built by him back then! This has to be one of my favorite fighters of all time…. be it for Aviation, or Sci-Fi. A fantastic creation by Alfred Wong.
This documentary is about the dying art of model making. Focusing on the personal stories of the model makers whose work shaped and enhanced the impact of feature films and gave it a breathtaking scale. Their practical hands on art is now slowly dying out, giving way to computer generated imagery.
The model makers share their experiences along with personal insights and behind the scenes views from films they worked on. Included are some of the best and well known model makers worldwide. The films on which they have worked include; STAR WARS, STAR TREK, CLOSE ENCOUNTERS, GHOSTBUSTERS, JAMES BOND GOLDENEYE, ARMAGEDDON, MOON, EDWARD SCISSORHANDS, CITY OF LOST CHILDREN, 1941, STARSHIP TROOPERS, UNDERWORLD, WATERWORLD, GODZILLA, TITANIC!

I have the pleasure of introducing another artist to this gallery. Not only is she a model artist, but she is a known actress as well. Here is the work of Sarah Scott. Showing first is her build of the Space Above and Beyond Marine Fighter of the 58th Squadron! This is one of my all time favorite fighter designs! She did a good job!
Collector Dale Long, owner of the famed Battlestar Galactica site https://www.byyourcommand.net , recently came forward with some photos of the full sized cockpit prop used in the 1990’s series Space Above and Beyond! This was one of the best concepts for a space fighter in my opinion…with the cockpit entirely being able to separate from the fighter and serve as an escape pod. I am thrilled that Dale is allowing this to be shown!
Magazine Designer Ian Blaza, and Ian Allan Publishing are producing a new publication… Spaceships of Science Fiction! This publication looks fantastic as you can see for yourself with the examples he emailed me to show here on Modeler Magic!
I have attached some sample spreads of the Spaceships of Science fiction publication with a brief synopsis.
Synopsis: For over a century cinema goers have been enthralled by films looking into the future and the endless possibilities of space travel. Spaceships of Science Fiction takes a nostalgic look at iconic spacecraft and cult classics from the world of TV and film.
Starting with an in depth history of the genre, the Spaceships of Science Fiction will then focus on a selection of spaceships from early films such as The Forbidden Planet and War of...
One of my favorite shows that only ran a single season was Space, Above and Beyond… the story of the young Marines of the 58th Squadron… “The Wild Cards”. They were based on a huge Carrier named the Saratoga. This beautiful piece was mastered as a kit by Jim for ACME 360 Models, and is still sold today! As James notes on his site, it is clear that the bridge area was influenced by The Star Destroyers we have all loved since 1977. I really like this piece regardless of that observation. Beautiful!

Using the actual CG Files that were used for the Television Series “Space, Above and Beyond” (that Mr. Mark Dickson shared with this Gallery… and gave his approval to use)… Master CG Artist Robbie Powell has taken the CG model (SEEN HERE) and has been bringing it forward with better detail for use as an actual Flight Simulator model! This is his amazing progress to date! I am excited to view the final version of the 58th Squadron’s Fighter! Great job to Robbie Powell!
