Here is my latest model kit. It’s the Springfield Class that was a part of the fleet that was destroyed by the Borg at Wolf 359. Rick Sternbach post some great reference pictures. The real thanks should go to the guys over at AST forums Andy Henshaw and (Gidian and Paul) who tirelessly researched the particular toy part and discovered it’s origins.

Scratch built one of a kind museum quality miniature of a USS MARSHALL class destroyer as seen in the 1980 Star Trek Spaceflight Chronology book from Pocket Books.

Drawn by Rick Sternbach, the Marshall Class was one of my favorite designs in the Chronology book.

Even though I loved the design, I wanted to do my own variation using the basic design as a start and giving it a more modern look. Styrene is used exclusively for the construction and LED lighting was added to the warp nacelles. The model is 1/537 scale and measures 17” in length.

It is powered by a 9v battery installed in the stained wood base which includ...

1:650 Enterprise 1701-D Built by Dan Grumeretz for the Kuhn Global / Modeler Magic Collection

Years in the making, the huge Enterprise beastie is finally complete! Artist Dan Grumertez did this piece absolute justice as he brought it to life over the last 6 months. He took painstaking care to make sure everything was where it needed to be… including the individually numbered life boats on the hull (of which are the only decals used on this build)! Everything was paint! He painted layers of paneling to achieve the effect that was on the original 6 foot filming model, utilizing colors provided to me by Rick Sternbach for another build we are doing of which he was involved in creating. Dan used LED technology, providing even light throughout the model. This piece was made for the ages with a metal armature holding up it’s nacelles and heavy head...

Painting the 40 Inch Enterprise 1701-D by Dan Grumeretz

Artist Dan Grumeretz is doing magnificent work on recreating the TNG 6 foot studio model paint job on this 40 inch Enterprise 1701-D. There were differences in this cast from the actual 6 foot studio model of which he worked well with, changing a few cast details, then incorporating the FOUR levels of paint paneling to fit this cast. Dan studied the 6 foot model paint scheme very closely to get these patterns correct. Like I stated, there were minor differences in this cast from the cast configuration of the 6 foot studio model, so he fit it as well as possible to recreate the 6 foot beast in this just under four foot version. Other than the twin red vinyl stripes going down the spine, all you see on this is paint, even the lettered markings…. NO DECALS were used...

USS Voyager Studio Model from Doug Drexler, Michael Okuda and Rick Sternbach

Last month famed Star Trek artist Doug Drexler placed up on his FaceBook page these fantastic photos of the Voyager studio model. I contacted them to have Rick respond that there would be no issues in showing these great photos on Modeler Magic for all to appreciate. Thank you fellas! You continue to inspire us all!

These are the best photos I have seen of this model….. the shadows are amazing!

This kit was built ten years ago for a now defunct Modeling website. The instructions were to take the stock kit and actualize it like the studio model and document it for their site. The photos were their property, but the model was mine. The kit out of the box wasn’t bad, but not accurate. I had to decide what was worth changing and what wasn’t. The basic shapes were off but not enough to change. Lifeboats were added and the forward window was enlarged as was the two side bridge windows. I spent hundreds of hours adding tiny slats to the phaser strips to correct them. After reviewing the color instructions of the model it became apparent they were way off...

1:900 (28 Inch) Enterprise 1701-D WIP by Rick Sternbach

December 2012
The one and only casting given to Rick of this cancelled Kit

now sits in the Modeler Magic / Kuhn Global Collection

for ALL to view. After the build is completed, photos will follow.

*****

When DeAgostini cancelled the 1:900 Enterpirse 1701-D kit (that they had worked together with Rick Sternbach to produce), many model builders were disappointed. One good thing that will come out of this is that DeAgostini sent parts of one to Rick himself as appreciation for his work. Nearly two months ago, (my apology for the delay) Rick sent me this photo of the Enterprise D (that is held together with tape) to tell me he will eventually build the piece! He let me know that when he does, he would try to show the build here on Modeler Magic...

That is right!…. You are not misreading the title! This model kit will be over 28 inches long and have clear parts that will display each deck of the Enterprise D from Star Trek The Next Generation. Heavily involved with this project is Star Trek’s own Rick Sternbach, who is assisting with the over-all fit, finish and even with internal decks with sections we never viewed in the TV series or Movie. This piece is being released by DeAgostini, but aside from Japan it is not yet known where this kit will also be released. Cross you fingers as I have several calls out to find out more...
