Stash of Sprues / Kevin Hoppert (2019) – NICE-N Model Designs – STAR WARS – Studio Scale ESCAPE POD

The Studio Scale Escape Pod was an original run, Nice-N Model Designs resin kit. Some parts were replaced with vintage kit parts, especially in the engine section, including copies of the original Sealab III hoses. This was on-and-off the bench for years before completion in 2019.

Stash of Sprues / Kevin Hoppert – STAR WARS: ROTJ – Death Star II Port Attack (1-144 Cross-Section) 2008-2013 & 2021 (Work-In-Progress)

The Death Star II Port Attack (Cross-Section) began life as a discarded metal store rack. The cross-section tunnel and lighting were completed between 2008 and 2010. The math of doing a port intrigued me as an long-time engineer. The top surface is hinged like a car hood for access to all inner workings and lighting. All surface port parts were hand-crafted and completed between 2011 and 2012. Mathematically, when connected, the port came out almost exact. The surface city-scape parts were laid out and completed between 2012 and 2013. This final phase of this project is being rebooted in summer 2021. Stay tuned…

Stash of Sprues / Kevin Hoppert (2013) – Sovereign Replicas / Richard Long – STAR WARS – Ralph McQuarrie CONCEPT – 1/24 X-Wing

This was a Studio-Scale-ish X-Wing Concept kit from the long “Out of Production” Sovereign Replicas stock. The kit was based on the McQuarrie concept drawings. The cockpit, dashboard, and droid are lit along with flickering lights in the engine. Subtle weathering was applied to finish this elegant version of the X-Wing.

Kevin Hoppert – David West Reynolds – Zvezda/Revell – Star Wars WIP – (2020) Scratch-N-Bash 1:2700 Imperial Star Destroyer Cross-Section

This is a work-in-progress scratch-N-bash of a cross-sectioned Imperial Star Destroyer, using the hull from a Zvezda/Revell (1-2700) commercial kit as a shell. The build is based on an illustration in the Star Wars Incredible Cross-Sections book, by David West Reynolds, who I met at Wonderfest a few years back. I just love any cross-section / cut-away illustrations and builds in any genre. The shell is a bit narrower and longer than the illustration and is no particular official Star Destroyer version, but I am adjusting innards to fit as I go. I also carefully and surgically moved back both rear side notches and the port deck turret section to match more closely, and correctly align, to the illustration...

Kevin Hoppert – Randy Cooper Models – STAR WARS – 1:96 SANDCRAWLER Diorama

This is built from a Randy Cooper Sandcrawler kit (2011), and is around 1/96 scale. The cockpit, headlights, and entry areas are all lit, and the final vehicle was set in a small diorama setting. Additional detail was added, mostly, in the upper engine sections. The paint and weathering were built up with seven layers.

Stash of Sprues / Kevin Hoppert – STAR WARS – Studio Scale TIE Bomber in Gantry

The Studio Scale TIE Bomber was kit-bashed with all of the actual vintage parts in late 2007. It was my first studio-scale build, getting back into the building side of the hobby after a long time on the collection-side. Rather than simply mounting on a Pana-vise, or rod equivalent, the Gantry was scratch-built over 2007-2008 and features a free-hanging custom mount hinge that pulls the TIE Bomber up into the gantry. The hinge is wrapped with Leopold and Morser Karl parts as a tribute to the vintage kits. The Gantry itself is custom-mounted through the heavy acrylic case, making the upper portion fully freely suspended, with the TIE Bomber fully removable for travel. The partial Death Star hanger wall was custom built and casted in resin, with custom hand-cut different faceplates.
