Built from a kit (commonly known as the V1) that had origins back to an original pyro model used in 1978’s Battlestar Galactica, artist Sean Sides of Square Models did a beautiful job re-creating this menacing machine as it appeared in the TV Series and 1979 movie.

The studio scale V2 HERO kit (Patterned by Mike Salzo) is available today from JAWS Models. There is also an idealized, plastic injected kit of the same scale being offered by Moebius Models

“After 2 1/2 years of on again/off again work, this most impressive model is finally done. There have been a lot of ups and downs during the construction of this model, but the end result makes it all worth while. I have to thank in particular Jim Key from Custom Replicas. Jim was incredibly helpful and supportive through this whole process, and was always there to answer questions, give advice, and most important, send me those lost spare parts!! I also need to thank my beautiful wife Christine for her patience, she put up with hundreds of hours of me ‘missing’ while I was working on this model...

This fantastic piece was recently shown to me. Built from the old Custom Replicas (Jim Key) 66 inch USS Enterprise Kit, Michael Plante had this built as the USS Enterprise as seen in the Star Trek Original Series HD Remaster! It is beautiful to see this model with panels subtly painted, and the nacelle interiors glowing blue. Plus.. look at that Shuttle Bay! This is definitely one of a kind, and beautifully done! I would love to see Michael’s collection placed on display in a Museum sometime…. it is amazing!

This took roughly 5 months time, and is a very rare Custom Replica’s kit….. it measured out to be over 67 inches long and was a visual feast. There are very few of these kits left. I found one by contacting Jim key, the prior owner of Custom replicas, who had sold the two last kits to a Florida resident. I managed to buy one the kits, as a client who had formerly ordered my 32 inch version, wanted this far bigger one.

The kit arrived, and soon it became clear that many parts were missing. It was a kit that had been around for decades, so lost parts were not unusual…however…there were many missing parts. I was able to scratch build several parts, but some were too complex...

My big E build is nearing the end. After seeing Kurt Kuhn’s donation of his first completed TimeSlip Creations studio scale TMP Enterprise Refit (by Dan Grumeretz) up close and personal at the 2019 Escape Velocity Convention, I kicked into high gear on this Custom Replicas TOS 66 inch USS Enterprise build. It’s been (so far) a 10 week labor of love, and if I could go back and tell my 15 year old self that I’d have 6 foot Enterprise in my house, my young self would have thought I was nuts! Yet as you can see… I am almost done!

I don’t build that often, but when I do, I’m particular about what I built as I don’t want to collect everything.

I’ve built a studio scale replica of the D7 Klingon Battle Cruiser used in Star Trek: The Original Series.

The colors scheme is that which came with the kit by Jim Key. It’s still inconclusive as to the exact color of the studio model verses that of Gene Roddenberry’s model that sat on his desk.
Gene’s model was by profiles in History -Estimate $65,000 – $85,000. The two tone green color paint scheme recommend by the kit maker is that of the Roddenberry model just mentioned. I did not follow the color recommended for the base. I wanted the base to reflect a 1960’s look.

Note: On the original model ‘Chrome Mylar tape’ was used on the engines grilles and lower end of the boom.

Just a little teaser of the almost completed TOS 66” 1701. Here is the first round rough fit, she is a hybrid and can look like both the original 1701 as seen on TV in the 60’s but also can show as a Phase 2 version with detailed and lit nacelle trenches and impulse engines. A lite aztecing has been done across the entire ship none of which would have been seen under the bright lights of the camera. Additionally, trying to stay true to the original, the weld lines were added to both the engineering section and nacelles which sadly did not make it back during the Smithsonian restoration. The primary hull and nacelles have been designed to be removable for shipping...
