Profiles in History 2017 – Gary Cannavo Collection – Buck Rogers in the 25th Century Studio Filming Model’s Photos

As previously stated in an earlier showing regarding this collection, Gary Cannavo no longer owns it, but during the process of placing it for sale, Profiles in History showed these amazing photos of it all during the Auction of the collection. Best known for his ownership of the Battlestar Galactica studio filming models, Gary also owned studio filming miniatures made for the 1980’s film and series Buck Rogers in the 25th Century which we show here today. It is a magnificent collection indeed and I am grateful of Gary for taking care of it all when he owned them. These are a great addition to go along with the studio model reference photos we already have shown here on Modelers Miniature & Magic.

GAL-356: The Original Galactica Shuttle Studio Model photographed by Jim Small

I shot these pictures of the original shuttle in 2008. It was carved from urethane foam clad in sheet plastic and detailed with hundreds of model kit parts. The model was restored a few years earlier by Ed Miarecki who had to re-dress it and repaint it after it had been used in Buck Rogers with a different paint scheme. Several parts on the model are not likely original as a result. However, these are by far the most extensive photos ever taken of the original model. Nobody else has shot it in this much detail at that time. Enjoy.

Buck Rogers… HAWK Fighter Studio Model Reference from ByYourCommand.net, Photos by James Small of the Gary Cannavo Collection

Recently Gary Cannavo, now the former owner of the both the original Battlestar Galactica and Buck Rogers studio model collection, allowed for some of the studio model photos taken by artist James Small to emerge after the sale was completed. These are some of those photos, permissions given and shared with Modeler Magic by Dale Long of ByYourCommand.net . This is one of the fantastic designs that came out of the Buck Rogers in the 25th Century Television series decades ago. Certainly one of my favorites! Even though a few of these were shown on Gary Cannavo’s site, BattleBuck.com, it is exciting to now see all of the Hawk Fighter photos. I am grateful to Dale Long, James Small, and of course, our friend Gary Cannavo for allowing us to show them here on Modeler Magic in High Resolution...

The Original Battlestar Galactica Flies Again! By Charles Adams and Richard Lindstrom

The 1978 version of the Galactica has always been one of my favorite sci-fi subjects. I’ve spent years studying the original filming model and I even designed and helped build a replica that became a centerpiece of Battlestar Galactica: The Exhibition in Seattle, Washington USA.GalRes2014_Image1

In all this time, however, I had never laid eyes on the original studio miniature. I’m fortunate to know the owner of the model. He has gone to great lengths (and expense) to rescue and preserve many of the original filming miniatures from both Galactica and Buck Rogers in the 25th Century. He had even asked me to help him replace some missing parts that were no longer on the Galactica. Unfortunately, he lives on the opposite side of the country from me. So, until now, I had not been able to make the trip.

All that...
