Paul Dilts – ROSSI Replicas 3D-Printed Kit – STAR WARS Sketchbook, Joe Johnston Concept Escape Pod

Around six weeks ago I did a kit my good friend Rob Rossi sent me this kit. He designed a Concept “A NEW HOPE” Escape Pod Kit. As it sat on my shelf I decided to get a crack at it. It was 3D printed in PLA, and with a few resin parts I did my own take on it. Since there is no real reference material other than the two black/white concept drawings from Joe Johnston in the Star Wars Sketchbook, I took some personal liberties with it. Rob’s kit was a great starting point, and I added my own greeblies, nurny’s, and do-dads along with custom lighting. I have to say it was a fun build.

Mystery 10 – Jason Eaton – STAR WARS – Joe Johnston’s SKETCHBOOK Death Star Laser Turret

This is absolutely brilliant work from world class model maker Jason Eaton! I remember the first time I viewed the sketchbook of the Death Star Laser Turret Joe Johnston penned… (AMAZING)… and Jason’s model representation is spot on! I love it! I highly recommend visiting Jason’s site, MYSTERY 10, to view many of the creations, builds and studio model refurbishments that he has been involved with. Outstanding work all!

This is what I always remember this initially… And then the artwork below Jason’s creation! Fantastic!

John Stuart – STAR WARS – “Johnston” Early Concept Millennium Falcon

This is model is based on a sketch that appeared in The Art of Solo: A Star Wars Film book which shows an artist sketching a version of the Millennium Falcon halfway between the Pirate Ship model (which later became the Blockade Runner) & the now familiar Falcon as we know it. The artist is believed to be Joe Johnston, but he can’t remember having it taken.

My model is made with PVC Foamex board, with kit parts added, and a small amount of 3D printed pieces. It’s painted with Archive X paint and weathered with oils, with the underside is still in its base coat.

Thanks
John Stuart

MYSTERY 10 – Jason Eaton’s 1/24 Johnston/Gawley Early Mock-Up TIE FIGHTER

My second “Star Wars Sketchbook” model is a mix of Joe Johnston art and the blueprints drawn by Steve Gawley. Of note, the very earliest TIE Fighter mock-up by ILM feature these more-segmented wings, so it’s really cool to bring this particular early iteration to life. Laurent Perini’s STAR WARS 1/144 Cargo Ship with Space Barge

I started a new model drawn from the Star Wars Universe star wars. I created this piece from a rare illustration by Joe Johnston. To my knowledge, it appeared only in a book of role plays (some of you may have more information on this….). In this book, it is explained that it is a Barge which is the link between the planets and the big cargo ship, so I imagined the vessel pushing containers to a cargo ship under the protection of hunters. The model is in scratch at 1/144 ….

Rossi Replicas – Corellian Corvette Joe Johnston Concept Build

I just finished a Corellian Corvette concept model that is based on sketches by Joe Johnston. I modified a Randy Cooper Corellian Gunship/Corvette resin kit. I just added some details to match the sketches as closely as possible. The paint scheme is based on some Ralph McQuarrie concept photos.

Jason Eaton’s 1/24 Johnston/Cantwell/McQuarrie Concept Y-Wing UPDATE!!

This has been quite the amazing journey to watch this come to life! It is nearly finished. Artist Jason Eaton is creating a Physical Model SKETCHBOOK of all those amazing concept art works from famed artists such as Ralph McQuarrie, Joe Johnston, Colin Cantwell, and now others from the original Star Wars films. This Y-Wing began life as a digital model that Jason created utilizing the sketches and art works of the above mentioned artists. As he completed the digital parts, Jason 3D Printed them to make this amazing physical model. I love the paint scheme he made on it…. which fits right into that Star Wars ‘look’.

Lee Ralph’s (Johnston/Rodis-Jamero SKETCHBOOK & Cantwell/McQuarrie Inspired) Concept Y-Wing – COMPLETED!!

Here is my Joe Johnston Star Wars Sketchbook Concept Y wing.

I’d been toying with the idea of building this some two years back or so now. Always did love the sketches by Joe and Nilo, along with the work of Ralph McQuarrie and Colin Cantwell.
So on this, I decided once a few bits were cleared from my bench, id set out to build her, entirely from scratch, in a hypothetical “what if” aspect.

Using the various sketches, the first port of call, was the rather sleek and aggressive cockpit module. This was built entirely from sheet styrene, and took quite some time to adjust to my liking, while staying with the sketch Joe Johnston so lovingly crafted.

Once the cockpit was pretty much finished, it was time to fashion a suitable armature from alloy, that I could begin to build the hull upon.
