International Payhauler by Barry Maddin – VFX Photos by E. James Small

I love beauty shots of miniatures. Especially that of artist Jim Small. Showing the build like it should be shown, Jim took care with these photos of a build by artist Barry Maddin!

Modelmaking buddy and Truro model club club member Barry Maddin came over yesterday with his model of an International Payhauler he had recently built (I gave him the kit but I told him he had to let me take pix of the model for fun) so I took these shots in an attempt to do some fun visual effects style shots in a hurry. The model is about a foot long, 1/25th scale from an ERTL kit with LED lighting.

Fog machine for atmosphere using 30 second time exposures. Tin foil rock foreground and background sprayed with gray primer and flat black. Cat litter and grout powder for “earth”. Took about ten minutes to make the set. A series of shots taken of which these are a few. Entire prep and shoot done over about an hour’s time.

Photographing models to make them look more realistic is as much fun as building them!
