USS Columbia – Practice Model by David Shaw

I thought I might share a small side project I’ve been working on… a scratch build of the scout Columbia at 1/500 scale.

This is a completely scratch built model with everything made by me. The primary hull and nacelle are based on my plans of the 11 foot studio model of the Enterprise reverse engineered from photographs of it (in the same way that I reverse engineered my plans of the 33 inch studio model). The masters and molds for those sections are for a 1/500 scale model of the Enterprise, but I made some additional parts from those molds to build the Columbia so I could see how the parts worked assembled and painted.

Built in about two months, this was meant to be a low pressure build just for the fun of building rather than as a part of a research project like many of my other models have been. I took some liberties with Franz Joseph’s original design by adding upper and lower sensor masts and pods. I had fun, so it was a success!

Along with some beauty shots of the model, I included one of the Columbia with my Phase II Enterprise (which is also 1/500 scale) and a series of shots showing how I built the master and mold of the lower primary hull (as an example of how I make parts like these).

Hope you like it!

Thanks
David
