“We’re Home!” – Klingon Bird of Prey Diorama by Danny Scott Prejoles

We have the pleasure of showing this fine work, introducing artist Danny Prejoles!

My Klingon Bird of Prey diorama is based on the climactic scene from Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home, in which the Enterprise crew crash-lands their acquired Klingon Bird of Prey (HMS Bounty) into the San Francisco Bay, after having time-traveled back to the 23rd century with George and Gracie.

The KBOP itself is the AMT kit with some very minor patches, alterations, and cheats to remedy some of the kit’s shortcomings. I painted it accordingly using Model Master Enamels and craft store paint and then weathered it with ink and acrylic washes and an oil paint dry brush.

The base is a layered cake consisting of Styrofoam, covered with Sculptamold that was painted and dry brushed, followed by a layer of Liquitex Heavy Gel Gloss Medium for texture, followed by many layers of Liquitex Acrylic Gloss Medium for gloss and depth, followed by rayon cotton tufts for the spray effect, and finally topped off with Liquitex High Gloss Varnish on everything for a final gloss to all of the water, including lightly brushed onto the rayon tufts to add a water droplet/splash effect to the spray.

This was one of those projects that was fun and kicked my butt at the same time, twisting my mind to try to figure out how to make things (especially the water) look right. (Huge shout-out to my loving and tolerant wife, who’s an artist, for her feedback and suggestions on how to improve the look.) The build process, the final outcome, and initial public reception have all been great reminders of why I got into this hobby in the first place.

Thanks for dropping in. Hope you enjoy it!
