This is a 3D printed, 40″ long reproduction of the Cygnus spaceship from Disney’s 1979 movie The Black Hole. The 3D parts were designed and produced over a span of around two years or so by a modeler named Dave Nelson who went by Primitive Dave on Shapeways.com where he made the parts available. I kept in touch with Dave while he was producing the parts and he also made available schematics for an acrylic armature that the Cygnus frame parts fit over in order to support the “soft and flexible” 3D printed parts and allow for the interior to be illuminated. Unfortunately Dave disappeared shortly after completing the parts and actually before working out the final details of the front of the armature...

So this is the DeAgostini kit with about 150 replacement parts. I used parts from Shapeways and original model kit parts to replace some of the kit. I also added about 30 missing parts that we didn’t catch on the MR version, because they had fallen off before we got to them. I also removed all of the molded screws and used real screws across the surface of the model. The paint job took about 120 hours and there’s probably about 250 hours in the build. I also added about 50 ultra-bright LEDs to the engine and it is blinding! The cockpit cone is a Shapeways replacement, because the kit cone was really bad. I worked with the factory to try to fix it but they just messed it up more, so I gave up...

Chris Olson here again. Been a few weeks, and I thought I’d send you a link to some photos of another of my models. This is my pride and joy. The DeAgostini studio scale Millennium Falcon. Heavily modified by myself, not Han Solo. All lighting was done with LEDs, from 3mm to 0402 SMD LEDs, along with some fiber optics throughout. I had to make additional bread boards and wiring to connect it all to the main kit circuit board. The whole model running off of a 9v power supply.
