Artist Doug Shortes is doing something I have yet to see anyone else do… the studio scale replica of the Motion Picture Vulcan Sled and Shuttle! This is magnificent and you can bet it will look fantastic when finished!

I attached a few pictures of the warp sled progress. I haven’t started the shuttle yet. This is build is mostly uncharted territory for me with laser cutting the acrylic framework myself. These two nacelles are both starboard side mockups and part of the learning curve. I just set it up for these photos to get a sense of the size. Bending the 1/4″ acrylic for the sled cross-over piece is also a challenge and just a test piece. Hopefully the 3rd try on the nacelles will be successful. In any case it’s very cool to see it finally taking physical form in full size...

Artist Douglas Shortes has returned with this fantastic build from the now “Out of Production” Studio Scale Kit by MSLZ22 Models. This piece is beautiful in every aspect! Douglas really nailed this one to be the crown of any collection! Nicely done!

This is my studio scale replica of the old BSG shuttle “GAL356” that I finished late last year.  It is a buildup of the fantastic MSLZ22 kit with a few modifications to get it as close to the studio model as I could.  Notable features are a 5-point pipe armature, halogen rear engine lights, functional exposed brass power plugs on the front and rear (like the original), and custom decals that I created. The shuttle is finished with enamel paint and weathered with a combination of watercolor washes and powered chalk pastels.

I haven’t seen one of these Studio Model Cylon Raiders done in some time….. and THIS one of beautiful! Built from the outstanding kit made by MSLZ22 Models (now out of production) professional artist Doug Shortes really brought this piece to life! It looks like a piece direct from APOGEE back in the day! From the comment below… I see I am not alone in that thought! Fantastic work!

Here are some pictures of the studio scale Cylon Raider I finished a few weeks ago.  This is the Mike Salzo V2 kit with some additional modifications to make it as accurate as possible.

My aim with this was to duplicate the weathering and patina of a used filming model...

When I first viewed this being built, my jaw dropped with amazement even then! Professional artist Douglas Shortes was building one of my favorite concept designs! And it ended up being a masterpiece! From the cockpit interior to the engine bells, this piece is one of a kind…. and a scratch built beauty! Not only does this artist build, but he is amazing with Composite work as well! He absolutely captured the fantastic Ralph McQuarrie design with perfection! I believe Mr. McQuarrie will be thrilled to view it!
