First I would like to thank artist Dan Grumeretz for his excellent work on this 1/24 T-70 X-Wing (Poe Dameron’s “Black” version). When The Force Awakens was released a few years ago, the anticipation of this new X-Wing design was great! I must admit to being quite excited myself. At that time, artist Richard Long began patterning the 1/24 T-70 X-Wing. He did a magnificent job, (as is his usual work). That stated, the patterns were not quite complete when he sent them to me just after The Last Jedi was released. I gave them to Kit Maker Randy Johnson (of KORBANTH) to complete and make a kit for everyone. Randy gave the patterns to artist Mark Worley to complete and enhance, which he did so beautifully, and it has become this fantastic kit you see here today…. and believe me when I say that these kits are very popular already.
Of the fantastic build by Dan Grumeretz, this Black ‘opened wing’ version is amazing. The kit fit together easily, and with all kits that end up here, I asked Dan to make a few modifications that would match more what I remembered on screen. He did a magnificent job enhancing this already great kit.
This kit can be made to make both The Force Awakens standard X-Wing, or The Last Jedi version with the Booster Engine. I asked Dan to make the rear so that it could be shown as either. Dan built up two rear plates with magnets embedded in them that they may be changed out. The booster engine supplied we felt was too small, so Dan scratch built a new larger version of it, also moving it more centered to be like what we remembered in the film. Here are some screen caps…
Dan customized the piping as well to match these screen captures.
Dan also made two custom pilots, and BB-8’s for me. The first pilot figure to go in the Black ‘open wing’ version is Poe in his flight suit, while the second to go in the White ‘closed wing’ version is Poe in his leather jacket. Each have their appropriate helmets as Dan custom made their heads. (Of Note: Copies of the heads were given to Mark Worley to hopefully be cast and placed in the kits, along with a few other parts Dan created to make a more screen accurate T-70). The interesting thing about the T-70 design, even though it is slightly smaller than the earlier T-65, is that it has a larger canopy and cockpit, making the pilot look like he is in a huge area. Never-the-less… Dan showed me a screen capture (shown from the above view of Poe’s X-Wing) that the excess space in the cockpit is true to the film.
One of the issues we came across when nearly completed is that the wing laser cannons looked short when placed on, so with my own preference, I asked Dan to add 1 inch to them to again look more like what I viewed in the film.
Along with other personal preference modifications, all in all, this build went quickly, due to it’s excellent engineering. Once again, Dan did make parts to more accurately represent the T-70’s we saw, and added the smallest of details in areas that were cast clean. However…. with all that stated…. what is initially offered in the KORBABTH kit is GREAT! It will build up fantastically for any display on it’s own merits.
This makes for a very long showing, however I am placing everything that can be seen for all to utilize…
Great job to all involved.
