1/2 Studio Scale S.S. Botany Bay by E. James Small

This is one of those timeless, classic builds of a ship known to all who know Star Trek. The ship that brought Khan to Kirk in the original series… the SS Botany Bay! Beautifully built from the Atomic City Model kit by industry famed master modeler E. James Small, this piece is now in the lucky hands of a collector! Jim’s amazing talents brought this piece to life with his use of subtle paint paneling and weathering to age the vessel! Beautiful work!

Here is what Mr. Small has to say about this great piece…

“Here’s a model of the “Botany Bay” spaceship as seen in the original series Star Trek episode “Space Seed” (where “Khan” is introduced), built from the Atomic City kit. The model was quick to build, with few flaws. The rear antenna masts I made from soldered brass rod instead of the included plastic for strength. I cheated in a couple of other places as well, for strength, as even the original miniature was delicate in that area. The antenna pods are removable so the model can be shipped to the customer and reassembled.Measuring slightly over 21 inches long, I guestimate it to be roughly half the size of the studio model. For the paint job, the customer was torn between the look of the original studio model as it was actually built, or the “on screen look” of the original miniature as filmed bluescreen in 1966 or so, and the new digital remastering as seen in the newer releases of the show, so I tried to go somewhere in between, as the three looks are quite different. The ship looked gray on screen, but the miniature was actually painted a brownish rust color but crudely and sparsely weathered. The digital remastered model looked tan colored with a lot of heavily weathered panels. I made a kind of “hybrid” of all three. The customer was pleased so I guess my interpretation was acceptable.

Enjoy!”
