Kit Description: Back in 1974, stealth technology was still in its infancy, and the U.S. military was keen to see if radar evasion was even possible. To determine “stealth”‘s feasibilty, DARPA invited all of America’s top aerospace companies to submit proposals for a “low observable” single-seat jet fighter. One of the top designs to emerge from the competition was Northrop’s XST (Experimental Survivable Testbed). It featured a simple diamond-shaped wing, faceted fuselage and, most distinguishing of all, a very large, centrally mounted overhead jet intake.
Although the plane’s flying characteristics were believed to be top-notch, the XST eventually lost out to Lockheed’s highly faceted “Hopeless Diamond,” which had superior “stealth” properties. The Hopeless Diamond would eventually morph into the Have Blue, and ultimately the F-117 operational stealth fighter.
But the XST is not forgotten. With the help of our friends at Anigrand Craftswork in Hong Kong, we proudly present this “What If?” fighter in 1:72 scale.
Our kit includes 17 pieces, including a clear resin cockpit and jet intake screen. The water-slide decals from JBOT offer your choice of markings for two operational squadrons. The finished model is 9 inches long.
