Hobbytown 1st Place! Jared Wynn’s (29 Inch!) Millennium Falcon HASBRO Conversion

On Oct. 20th the local Hobbytown n Boise, ID held their annual model building contest. The last time I visited the store, a clerk told me about the upcoming contest, and I told him about my Hasbro Millennium Falcon conversion and he really encouraged me to enter the contest. The previous contest, all that entered were either Gundam or military builds. So he seemed eager to see other types of builds. Now for years I had wanted to enter a model into the Western Idaho Fair here in Boise, held in August. I have wanted to do that for years, but the fair came and went over the years. From the models that would be entered and win the prizes, I knew I could do better. I’m sorry but a Seaview painted blue shouldn’t win first place. I finally entered my Millennium Falcon into the fair, when the fair rolled around and I got to see where I placed. I received an honorable mention for a good paint job… I wasn’t too thrilled with that. Now the model that won first place absolutely deserved it. It was a scratch built Krell power monitor from Forbidden Planet. The fellow who built this had it controlled by an Arduino board which simulated the exact pattern from the film when the Monster from the Id was attacking the C-57D. So I moved on after the experience, telling my self I will try again and hopefully place higher the next time.

So when it came time to enter my Falcon and Space:1999 Eagle Transporter which I have just recently finished. Upon entering the store and coming in with my Falcon, the clerks at the Hobbytown I think were impressed by the sheer size of it, and then I brought in the Eagle. Many had no clue what it was, even though the kit is for sale in the store. I took my models to the back, they had to pull another table out because there was no room for it, so they made the room. Many other had entered their models into the contest. The skill levels varied, but all were encouraged to enter their work. I talked to few people who asked about my falcon and how I made it, mostly remarking at the size of the model. I left the store because I had a few errands and family matters to attend to, it was a Saturday after all. I went back after 5, when the models were to be picked up, the judging had occurred a few hours before. I was surprised to be theist person to pick their models up, the room was empty except for my Falcon and Eagle builds. And I was pleasantly surprised to find that the Millennium Falcon had a First place ribbon sitting on it. I honestly wish I saw what else won. There were many good build there, a Delorean Time Machine, Robot B-9 with a glass dome, but I guess the Falcon had stolen the show. Now my Eagle Transporter build didn’t get any accolades, but that was okay. The Falcon beat it by 12 parsecs, especially if you round down.

Thanks,
Jared Wynn
