The Michael Hawes Collection – Marc Elkins – Mike Salzo – STAR WARS: The Empire Strikes Back – Studio Scale (8 Foot / 2.4m) Star Destroyer AVANGER – Work in Progress Update #2

Michael Hawes is making dreams come true once again! Here is the story of the Avenger that he is helping come to life!

Six years ago I was able to visit my friend, and artist Marc Elkins. He brought me to his shop area where he showed me his latest progress on the 8 foot (studio scale) Star Destroyer Avenger he was making. He had shown me the initial layout, and footprint of this behemoth model a few years before and I was looking forward to viewing the physical creation. That time had come, and what an amazing site this was to behold… as the Superstructure was now complete and the shape was ominous to view. Marc had already scratch built a 6 foot version of the Avenger (which now resides with Michael Plante), so I was excited to see what he did with this one as well. As the business of life sometimes pulls us from projects, such was the case of this Star Destroyer project of Marcs. Thus, just a month ago I received an excited call from Mike Hawes (as his passion for this art form is as fantastic as many of ours reading this posting). He had just purchased this amazing, in progress piece from Marc, and he and his son Indiana were traveling to pick it up from Marc’s shop. After doing so, Mike and his son actually stopped by my own home while bringing this amazing piece back to Texas. When Mike showed up at my door he had a huge smile on his face regarding the Avenger that was sitting in his rented Suburban. I fully understand this joy…lol. Once Mike got this superstructure back to his Texas shop, he promptly made a crate for it and sent it on it’s way to artist Mike Salzo to be completed. As one may imagine, and may have experienced, the tension for its safety to arrive there was high, and yet it surely did, with great relief to us all… lol. Mike Salzo promptly got to work on this amazing piece that Marc Elkins began years ago. As you can see, the kit-bashing on this model is in great depth (one may remember the Battlestar Galactica studio model when recalling this type of model making). This studio scale AVENGER shall require around $10,000 USD in just purchasing the right model kits to make up this giant model’s details in order to make a proper replica.

Needless to say, Mike Hawes is surely excited to see this piece completed to adorn his magnificent display Gallery. I echo his excitement, and I am also excited for both him, and the art form to be able to have such a beautiful piece eventually joining it’s shown ranks of excellence and joy. I guarantee this piece shall be talked about for years to come as it is seen more and more. I wish to thank Marc Elkins, Mike Salzo, and absolutely Michael Hawes for making this piece happen. Once completed, this piece shall be among a small handful of those whom have created replicas of this model…. a very small handful indeed.

Here are the photos that Michael Hawes sent me to show today. You may also look at Marc’s initial build of the superstructure by clicking HERE, or on the VIEW MORE HERE button below.
