This is my recently completed MPC X wing. This model is built and painted to replicate the model made by Brian Johnson for The Empire Strikes Back.
The original model was sold a short time ago by Propstore of London, spurring a contest arranged by Guy Cowen of a Archive-X and kindly supported by Propstore. I did not enter said contest, in replicating this model, but that said, did have a fancy for doing a replica of my own.
The canopy in my kit was damaged, so to save the model I did cheat somewhat and create my own framed canopy from 1mm styrene strip, and blend the into the hull, which gives this particular model a bit of its own identity.
The model is painted exclusively in Archive-X enamels, which I have to say, are the best paints on the market for us filming miniature nerds to use as a very resourceful toolbox to emulate the miniatures as painted way back in time and they replicate the beautiful Floquil hues perfectly, hand in glove, just as much as that super rare donor part us builders are always on the hunt for.
The base coat was a coat of light Grime. Upon this the various panels were applied, with hues such as SP Daylight Red, 1965 Light Earth, Weyerhauser Green, SP Light Lark Grey, and Light Reefer grey. The entire model was then lightly misted, with SP Dark Lark grey, darker in patches, lighter in others. Over this various hand applied washes were applied with SP Dark Lark, using Naptha as a setting medium.
The tricky part was then laying Engine black on the various scorch marks that adorn the original prop, very hard to get a perfect balance with stark blacks, so I did my best in this area.
Once the whole model was completed, a final liberal misting of the Grime base coat was then applied across the model.
Overall a really fun project, and its amazing what a can be achieved from such a simple and once cheap abundant model from our youth.
