Pegasus  “Mercury 9”  Diorama

 

I wanted to do something extra with this excellent kit so I decided to make a full diorama utilizing the parts from the kit as a basis.

 

I felt it would be fun to expand the basic look with some extra buildings and a raised launch platform. In reality the launch facilities would be a few miles away from the launch area but as this is only a representation…artistic license prevails.

 

The base is made with a piece of grey formica (mounted to a piece of 3/4″ MDF) scribed to represent concrete. The areas under the buildings is painted black styrene to represent asphalt.The main building was upgraded with opened up windows and the addition of windows on the sides and back. LED’s were added to the building, the search light and the rocket engines and launch pad.

 

All the other support buildings and long range antenna arrays were made with parts from the scrap box as well as some vacuum formed parts I had laying around.

 

The launch platform was scratchbuilt except for the addition of the Pegasus launch platform that was part of the kit. As I wanted the rocket to be removable I had to figure out how to run the power leads to the LED’s but give me the option of being able to remove the rocket from the platform. This was accomplished by adding a second small imbilical to the main arm that would detach from the side of the rocket. You can just see it below the main fuel line.

 

All in all, a fun project and it looks great with the lights on.
