MarioMaker – Original AMT/Ertl – 1/350 Klingon Bird of Prey (Built Nearly 30 Years Ago!)

This model was built almost 30 years ago and has been stored in a box.

I’ve always loved the “football player with shoulder pads” design and found this kit someone was selling in the south west. Since nobody was making a plastic injection molded kit of this ship at the time and I found this resin kit, it was a no brainer. The kit itself wasn’t heavily detailed which is fine by me. It gave me a chance to ad more detail plating which is a lot of fun. It’s not a big model so the details added were very tiny, but then, my eyes were a lot better back then so it wasn’t a problem. Now as my eyes fade, my models seem to be much larger to compensate for my blurry vision.

The kit includes a Klingon logo as a base but I had no confidence that it was enough to hold the ship steady so I decided to increase the footprint with a triangle base which matches the 3 point of the logo, giving it an aggressive stance. The writing on the base are laser cut vinyl stickers and I have no idea what it says but it looks cool. The “radar” looking torpedo launcher detail was also laser cut.

All paints on the model were automative lacquer that I mixed. This was when that type of paint was easily available. Weathering was done with Floquils (the real ones, not the sad imitation ones of today).

All the graphics on the ship were masked and sprayed. Again, this was when my eyes were sharp. Overall, I really loved the design of the ship, enjoyed adding the additional plates and details and despite my modest model building skills 30 years ago, I’m still proud of this build today. I had too much fun building it.
