J.A.W.S. Models – Kuhn Global – Studio Scale APOGEE “The Long Patrol” Viper Replica by Dan Grumeretz

“The Long Patrol” …. this original series Battlestar Galactica Episode intrigued many with it’s early Viper design. The straight wing had a few people confused…lol. This fantastic creation was made by APOGEE for that episode. Sometime in there, this design of the model was stolen, only to show up later. That stated… as I understand it… after the original was stolen, Universal Hartland made their own replica to finish the episode. The model replica we show today is based off the original APOGEE Viper. This studio scale Viper kit was actually patterned by artist Jason Eaton, utilizing reference of the stated APOGEE Viper. He actually built his own that you may view HERE. It is now readily available as a KIT from J.A.W.S. Models, and you may order one HERE!

This model was given to me by Jason Wright of J.A.W.S. Models years ago, and with all we have had going on, this is the first opportunity we have had to get to it. I asked artist Dan Grumeretz to take this on.

Thanks to reference shown on Dale Long’s site ByYourCommand.net, and the use of one or two other references randomly found on the internet, Dan was able to get the reference we wanted to be able to re-crate this fantastic, straight-winged miniature. The wing shape actually reminds me of the Marauder from Buck Rogers in the 25th Century.

Needless to say, the J.A.W.S. model kit is beautiful, and it was patterned so well by Jason Eaton that very little was changed, or added to make this the way we envisioned it. Straight from the box it is a most excellent display when built as is. Dan decided to make the pilot to look like the actor we viewed toward the beginning of the episode. The other items added were the wing tip extensions to make them likened to that seen on the APOGEE studio model. While there was already a mesh pattern cast into the front fuselage intake, we decided to add a piece of KoolShade anyway to give it that extra bit of detail that would enhance it even more. With all of that done, this piece turned out wonderfully, and I am excited to get it in front of the Blue Screen for Photos. They will come soon…. very soon. I want to thank Jason Wright (J.A.W.S. Models) for this great model kit, as well as Apogee, Jason Eaton, Dale Long and Dan Grumeretz for their contributions in bringing this to life. Beautiful work by all!

Jason Eaton

Jason Eaton is a model builder who has spent the past fourteen years working with Star Wars license holders including Master Replicas, EFX, and Sideshow, creating paint masters and prototypes for many of the studio scale and scaled props, ships, and characters seen in the Star Wars films, and is honored to continue the work in this new era of Star Wars subjects. He has also performed this service for many other licenses and license holders such as Palisades Toys, Quantum Mechanix, Hollywood Collectibles Group, and Chronicle Collectibles, as well as the occasional private commission work for various private clients. His passion and dedication has sent him to the Skywalker Ranch archives, Tokyo Japan, and many other places, always striving to better the hobby and the work. He’s more of a builder and less of a collector, so sometimes his personal work will “leave the nest” to make way for the next hare-brained project! He also thinks speaking in the third person is weird.
