Kit Description: Fantastic Plastic Models is thrilled to offer the HL-10 in 1:48 scale. The 37-piece kit was mastered by George Waldron and Scott Lowther. The kit features a detailed interior, landing gear, and a clear resin cockpit canopy and bubble nose. The decals were designed by JBOT and printed by Tango Papa Decals.

The Northrop HL-10 was one of five experimental “lifting bodies” developed by NASA during the 1960s and early 1970s to determine the characteristics necessary for controlled, unpowered descent from orbit. Developed at NASA’s Flight Research Center — later Dryden Flight Research Center — the HL-10 made its first flight on December 22, 1966 from Edwards Air Force Base in California. It made a total of 37 flights, 24 of them powered, before being retired in 1970. Lessons learned from the HL-10 and its sister lifting bodies were subsequently incorporated into the design for the American Space Shuttle.

But while the HL-10 was an historically important X-plane, perhaps its greatest claim to fame was as the ride of fictional astronaut Steve Austin, who famously flew — and crashed — the vehicle in the opening of every episode of ABC-TV’s 1970s classic “The Six Million Dollar Man.” (Although actual crash footage was of the HL-10s sister ship, the Northrop M2-F2.)
