Build Description:
This build utilizes the fine quality Moebius Models kit, highly modified to maximize the excitement and visually stimulating design of the classic 1960’s spaceship from the Lost in Space TV series.
The ship sits upon a wooden oval base painted with House of Kolors urethane enamels embellished with large amounts of metal flake. Four fluorescent green Lucite rods support the hull. Each rod is illuminated by a blue LED light source, creating a glowing effect up the rods and on the lower hull surface. The base lighting is powered by a separate 9 volt battery pack located on the rear of the base. Felt tips are on top of the rods to protect the painted surface. A custom-painted modified project box houses all of the control toggle switches for all of the lighting, as well as the speaker for the sound. The ship itself is powered by a 5 volt wall mounted power source.
The hull of the ship itself is painted inside and out with House of Kolors Orion Silver basecoat, top coated on the outer hull with 6 coats of HOK Kosmic Klear with my own trademark rainbow micro flake in the mix. The finish is absolutely stunning in the sunlight and even in artificial light. A large viewport has been cut at the rear of the upper hull and fitted with an amber viewing window, providing a great view of the entire interior of the ship.
All of the interior painted components are finished in Tamiya Lacquers for a smooth finish as well. The only brush painting on this build is the figures. All other components are airbrushed, spray can, or commercial spray gun for a smooth professional finish.
Included in this build are (4) electronic circuit boards from VoodooFX controlling stationary and random pulsating functions for the huge amount of LED’s utilized in this build. (There are over 70 LED’s including the core board) The fusion core itself has multi-speed functions.
Randy Neubert of VoodooFX (www.voodoofx.com)
has been my mentor for the past several years, and his high quality model electronics provide incredible visual effects. I used his complete interior lighting kit, fusion core, and computer wall kit. I added more LED’s to these kits.
The LED’s are enclosed in aluminum tubes, in which thousands of fiber optics strands are fitted and ran to each area of the ships interior.
High quality fiber optics strands from
The Fiber Optic Store (www.thefiberopticstore.com)
were utilized on virtually every wall in the ship.
EVERY control panel in the ship is illuminated. Please study the photos carefully and note door controls, elevator controls, astrogator manual controls, science station, main console, outside door controls, outside stairwell door controls, EVERYTHING, is illuminated.
No panel was left untouched!
The complete photoetched parts kit from
Paragrafix (www.paragrafix.biz)
replaced all of the interior panels. The kit panels were all carefully ground smooth and/or cut out to provide back lighting and fiber optics access. After placing the complete Paragrafix decal set, thousands of micro-sized holes were drilled thru the etched parts for fiber optics placement, then clear coated. Fibers are all securely cemented with black silicone adhesive. Every other component in the ship is attached using CA adhesive.
The floor ring and many other decals used throughout the ship are from TSDS Model Decals (www.tsdsinc.com).
All of the lettering decals were made by myself.
The resin figures of the Space Family Robinsons are from
Crows Nest Micro Masterpieces
which I purchased from www.CultTVman.com , also the source of where I purchased the SonicFX sound board which provides the lift-off and engine sounds.
The upper hull sits on top of (4) aluminum rods, which allow viewing of not only the ships interior, but all of the “behind the scenes” areas which generate the special effects. Close attention to detail, clean application and fitting provide a pleasing view all around.
Please view all of the photographs and videos of this build on my sites. It represents 180 hours of documented work, a labor of love and dedication to fine detail and top quality work.
