I may as well introduce myself with my most recent work, the Buzzard. I have attached 10 images in the format as requested (Hope I got it right; my camera is very basic….). As I wrote previously, I am a semi professional model builder at an engineering firm, but of course in this environment, there is no room for creativity or any fancy detail work or weathering! Build right off the plans as those are the parameters of the job! The perks are salvaging many interesting shapes when the company is done with the models and access to a 3D printer and laser cutter!
The Buzzard is a Martin Bower inspired space vehicle from an imagined alternate timeline. I’m sure you are familiar with “Space:1999″ (I see that sweet 22” Eagle on the home page! A model I must have…) In it, the nuclear disaster is averted and a new solution to dispose of nuclear waste is found. In the series “Space: 2019”, the long haul “space trucks” (yes, I’ve seen that film too!) ship the waste to the sun and then fire the payload into the fire. (If you go back to my Blog page, I have just competed yet another post this time with a synopsis of the 24 episodes from Season One with some fake title cards…). Since I grew up watching Gerry Anderson productions, it was long overdue to pay homage to the man. I tried to keep the ship in the “1999” universe, or as Martin Bower would have built it.
Not much out of the ordinary model techniques really. I like to salvage shapes and other bits and pieces rather than build from a kit anymore. Kits are good sources as templates and for greebles, This model was made primarily from three kits. An old 1/25 tanker truck trailer, a previously build Eagle, and a salvaged Revell Space Shuttle. I also used lots of other found parts from armor and aircraft kits plus what was in the shapes boxes. Keen eyes should be able to pick out distinctive bits. I build from my mind and very rarely sketch or draw anything. This sometimes causes delays and rebuilds if it doesn’t look right from other angles. Painting was by spray or brush depending on the size of the section, and most of my weathering and dirtying-down is done with pastels.
