The completed “Star Trek Federation Work Shuttle” project. Started in October of 2020, it’s been quite a ride. A most challenging but fun project. It started out with an idea in January of 2020, started in Oct and completed today, April 21, 2021.
Scratch built the classic way with sheet styrene, acrylic and kit greeblies. Lighting consists of LED engine lights, front light, underbelly lights, flashing marker lights and fiber optics in the cockpit powered by mini LEDs.
The power source for the ship is a 9 volt power supply running the ships 12 volt LEDs. The cockpit instrument fiber optics are lit by 3 volt LEDs using a LM 2596 step down module to convert the 9 volts down to 3 volts. The 9 volt power is running through the piece of ground equipment into a outlet at the back of the ship. I wanted to use the wiring as part of the diorama base. The switches are routed through the thick ribbed cable at the back of the ship and connects to a removable connector which was built specifically for this project.
The dilithium container also houses six 3 volt LEDs that use a second step down module mounted in the base.
The ship measures 20 1/2” long without the grappler arms and 25” with the arms attached.
It measures 14” wide and 8 1/2” high.
The wood diorama base was constructed with an MDF center with poplar frames. The landing pad “tiles” were cut from ribbed Evergreen sheet and cemented in place with the styrene frame parts.
The ground equipment boxes were all scratch built with greeblies added for detail. The cargo containers were made with styrene and painted white with Stark Industries decals made on my laser printer. I love adding humor into my dioramas. The boarding ladder was made using a section of Plastruct ladder, railing and Evergreen for the main construction.
The big cargo container that sit in the center of the Shuttle was made from Evergreen sheet and strip stock . It has a full complement of scratch built cargo inside.
The all girl crew were purchased resin kits and were detailed and painted with matching uniforms.
