As I needed an intermission from my current project, I came across some DIY snow globe kits at a local dollar store. These hard plastic spheres are 4″ in diameter and come with a plug and screw on “cap”. Ideas began to flood in, and eventually I settled on an anime theme. Although I also wondered why the globes had to be just for snow. How about a desert version? I took an image from the series “Dougram: Fang of the Sun”, a 75 part mecha series from 1981. (I won’t go into detail here; feel free to research as there are many models still available.) The first episode starts the end; a rusted out hulk in the desert.
I dug up one of my old 1/144 Nitto kits and destroyed it. I tried to duplicate the image as best as possible, which wasn’t easy. The mech was distressed, battle damaged and washed with paint which had fine sand mixed in. The base is tooling foam sculpted to look like rock and painted. One important thing to remember was no water based glues or paints; enamels, lacquers and super glues! Before putting the finished model in the globe, I had to find a suitable sand. Too fine and it stay suspended; to coarse and it just dropped. I found a mid range at a local nursery and washed the dust and impurities out. Distilled water in the globe with a little glycerin as a thickener completed the recipe. The cap was sealed with Teflon tape and a wooden base to finish the job. During construction, many more ideas came to mind. I now have six more empty globe kits standing by…
