I don’t build that often, but when I do, I’m particular about what I built as I don’t want to collect everything.
I’ve built a studio scale replica of the D7 Klingon Battle Cruiser used in Star Trek: The Original Series.
The colors scheme is that which came with the kit by Jim Key. It’s still inconclusive as to the exact color of the studio model verses that of Gene Roddenberry’s model that sat on his desk.
Gene’s model was by profiles in History -Estimate $65,000 – $85,000. The two tone green color paint scheme recommend by the kit maker is that of the Roddenberry model just mentioned. I did not follow the color recommended for the base. I wanted the base to reflect a 1960’s look.
Note: On the original model ‘Chrome Mylar tape’ was used on the engines grilles and lower end of the boom.
This Klingon D7 was built from the Custom Replicas (Jim Key) studio scale resin kit, (SEEN HERE) which is no longer available.
This is taken from Jim’s site as his description…
“Klingon D7. At nearly 28.625” long, this studio-scale miniature is a “virtual copy” taken from a scan of an original casting, and then re-sized and drawn in Rhino 3D in order to match up to the original studio scale proportions. Once al the 3D files were drawn by John Ortmann Jr, they were then sent out to Solid Concepts to be grown using the Poly-Jet high resolution rapid prototyping system. With all rapid parts cleaned up and molded, castings were made using Silpak Hardcast to minimize shrinkage, and assembled into 2 final presentation miniatures – one using the two tone green paint scheme, the other using the single green tone paint scheme. For all intents and purposes, these re-creations are virtually identical to the original filming miniatures. This now classic attack cruiser is presented in 1/300 scale, to match the original studio scale of the Klingon D-7 filming miniature. As such, it measures an impressive 28.625” in length, making it the only correct sized collectible offered to the garage kit industry to date. It is the basis by which the other matching Enterprise kits were designed around.”
